Building 102 at Pier 70, San Francisco

This 100year old, light-filled building is still home to the massive compressors (idle for years) which supplied air for the shops and tools of the sprawling shipyard complex at the foot of Protrero Hill, San Francisco.

Beautifully made wood patterns for creating molds.
 Motor and flywheel detail
I like how the needle looks like the Eiffel tower
The gantry crane runs the length of the building
"Butter Balls" - I think not.
I made a picture similar to this a dozen years ago and not much has changed!
 "Hull Black Enamel"

A restaurant is a likely future use of the space.
The hum and vibration when all 4 compressors were running must have been terribly impressive!
Image made 2002 using color neg film. Sign is gone now.

Power from the wind

The large groupings of wind turbines in the beautiful, barren Montezuma Hills are a lovely sight.

Changing skyline of San Francisco 2004-2012

I often shoot photographs from this vantage point. The pier reaches far into the Bay and the views of the ship traffic and the skyline are glorious. The larger background image was shot during May 2004 using film and the 2012 image is just a few weeks old. I made this GIF to illustrate the rapid and continuing development in the SOMA and Rincon Hill neighborhoods!

The Urban Landscape - Location workshop

I'll be teaching an exciting workshop this summer through The Imageflow in Mill Valley. It'll include a whole day of shooting at the historical former Navy Shipyard on Mare Island, Vallejo where we'll be able to go "behind the scenes".

Urban Landscape

$300 Aug. 2nd 6:30-9, Aug. 4th All Day Shoot, Aug. 9th 6:30-9
Price: $300.00
This workshop is structured around 2 classroom sessions with a day-long Saturday location shoot on Mare Island / Vallejo in between.  In the initial meeting, there will be a brief presentation on the subject, as well as a discussion on the important practicioners and their photographic output.  Shooting techniques, equipment considerations, best practices and safety concerns will also be addressed.  On Saturday, the class will meet at dawn on historic Mare Island to spend the day shooting along the waterfront and around the many structures.  During this session, there will be ample time for one-on-one instruction and image review on student laptops/tablets.  After lunch we can continue on Mare Island and/or explore nearby Vallejo. The subsequent classroom session will be dedicated to reviewing 5 images per student, as well as discussing the shooting experience and any concerns regarding editing, post-processing, and presentation.Henrik Kam's Urban Landscape Photos.
